    Abstract

Much has been written on deterioration models for Water Main Pipes (WMPs). These studies have bearing on either the statistical-based or the physical-based factors. The aim of this paper is to develop a deterioration model that integrates both statistical and physical-based factors. In doing so, this paper introduces a fuzzy-based deterioration model by mapping the failure rate, internal pressure, and burial depth of WMPs to an index, termed deterioration rate. In the first step, failure rate, internal pressure, and burial depth are fuzzified. In the second step, this paper defines 27 IF-THEN rules. The third step performs a defuzzification process so as to obtain the proposed index. The results of the proposed model enable water utilities to develop cost effective renewal and rehabilitation plans.
