Abstract

A database of wind speed and wave height spanning more than 20 years is compiled from all altimeter missions which have been in operation. The data for this full period is calibrated against oceanographic buoys and compared for consistency. The resulting database provides global coverage and is a very valuable engineering design tool. Applications such as estimating extreme wave conditions and the monitoring of long term climate changes can be investigated with the database.
