Abstract

A new species of oribatid mite, Moritzoppia oreia sp. nov. is described from montane sites in Scotland, Wales, England and Eire. The species is morphologically closest to M. clavigera (Hammer, 1952) which is redescribed herein. Moritzoppia oreia sp. nov. differs from M. clavigera in that it has one solenidion on tarsus II rather than two, five pairs of genital setae rather than four pairs and the alveoli of the lamellar setae are situated some distance anterior of the apices of the costulae rather than adjacent to them. The definition of the genus Moritzoppia is dicussed and modified.
