    Abstract

The order of the parrots (Psittaciformes) includes more than 400 species, mostly of tropical and subtropical distribution. Around a third of the extant species fall into one of the threatened categories (classified as Vulnerable, Endangered, or Critically Endangered) by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. The illegal wildlife trade is a particular threat to this colourful group of birds, in addition to other major threats like habitat destruction, expansion of agriculture, deforestation, and the introduction of invasive species. Parrots are also widely popular in Hungary, but they are often referred under different vernacular names in magazine articles, translations of wildlife documentaries, and popular internet portals. In this publication, we present the Hungarian vernacular names and taxonomic classifications of all extant and extinct parrot species based on the latest phylogenetic results for the first time. These are also available in a regularly updated online database https://georgeolah.com/papagajok or https://wildlifemessengers.org/papagajok, including the taxonomic ranks, scientific (Latin), English, Hungarian, and previous Latin and Hungarian names of the listed species, their conservation status based on the IUCN Red List, and up-to-date information on the international and domestic restrictions to keeping and trading them as pets. With this publication we aim to clarify the use of Hungarian nomenclature of parrots among biologists, taxonomists, lawyers, professional translators, nature filmmakers, parrot breeders, and animal keepers.
