Abstract
Measurements of the redox state of Earth and planetary materials require a very different set of techniques from those used to quantify elemental concentrations and isotopic ratios. Here, we review X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) and Mossbauer spectroscopies, from the fundamental theoretical principles underpinning the techniques to the practicalities of conduction an analysis and interpreting the data. In addition we discuss a handful of other relevant techniques.
