Abstract
The chapter proposes that the sentence structures that play a large role in generative grammar can be regarded as 'aspirational' equivalence classes of proofs (or computations) that an utterance has certain properites, such as grammaticaity or meaning in a kind of context, or appropriateness in a genre. These are 'aspirational', becaue unlike in Proof Theory, where the investigators have a worked out formalization of the proofs that they are identifying in classes, in linguistics, the nature of these proofs or computations is a work in progress.
