    Abstract

International financial institutions including the World Bank and regional development banks have established accountability mechanisms to handle problem projects which adversely impact on people. This chapter focuses on two case studies where problem projects have been addressed and resolved under the Asian Development Bank’s Accountability Mechanism and the World Bank Inspection Panel. It also considers how problem projects can be resolved through other avenues to address affected peoples’ concerns. It concludes by exploring how these institutions address investment retention for the benefit of the borrowing country, the people, and the economy.
