Abstract
How we need music has been made profoundly clear over the Pandemic. Balcony concerts, online lessons and home recordings prove that what is essential, adapts to survive. Musicians unable to perform concert halls due to social distancing policies have been forced to find new performance spaces that defy the corona crisis. Consequently, the 1:1 CONCERTS have been created, inspired by the work of performance artist Marina Abramovia's 'Listening differently' ; one musician, 1 listener at a 2 metre distance experiencing a 10 min. non-verbal 1-to-1-encounter. Previously a voluntarily run social project to raise funds for out of work musicians, Sally Walker curated an adapted format for the Adelaide Festival with 169 ticketed concerts in ten venues (Carrick Hill, Hans Heysen House, Elder Hall, Ukaria, Score Board of Adelaide Oval, Government House, Central Art Studios, David Roche Foundation, Central Art Studios, Hotel Indigo Central Markets) with ten musicians alternating. Great critical acclaim ensued with a five star review in Limelight and a particularly powerful concert experience proved to be the performances for women experiencing homelessness.
