Abstract
SIX weeks after the dramatic firing of ISAF commander General Stanley McChrystal, the next phase of the Afghan war is taking shape. Western allies do not have the stomach to implement the ambitious strategy laid out by Barack Obama only six months ago, but the war itself is also not likely to end soon. Managing the transition to the next phase will pose significant challenges for the next Australian government.
