Abstract

In this paper I shall attempt to show that a considerable amount of recent effort in linguistic theory has been devoted to a non-solution of an apparent problem. 1 The problem arises through a communicative contrast. In some cases a sentence conveys its literal meaning. For instance, suppose a speaker (S) utters to someone (A).
