Overview of the history of state and federal art gallery collecting of Indigenous art, commencing from the first acquisition of a work by an Indigenous artist by an art gallery, being Albert Namatjira's 'Illum-Baura (Haasts Bluff), 1939, acquired by the Art Gallery of South Australia that same year. Essay covers the history of the Art Gallery of Western Australia's Indigenous collection.
