Abstract
The essays collected here examine a wide range of photographs produced in Australia and the Pacific between 1850 and 1920. Combining the scholarship of twenty-two Australian Art historians, Historians, Anthropologists and Curators, the collection establishes photographys documentary and artistic role and offers rich, new insights into the ways in which photography helped shape modern Australian society in it early and arguably most formative years.
