Abstract
Although, there are many good introductory text books on programming in Java, the reason for writing yet another one was to provide one that exactly matched the first year subject that I teach at ANU. Also I wanted to create a textbook that was "free" to students and others. This project started at the end of 2008 and originally I made use of a `Wiki' and enabled students to freely edit this document, however, after a year without any edits from students (at least any that I noticed) I thought it best I just move it to a normal text book format. Any ideas on how this material could be improved are more than welcome.
