Abstract
The Australian National University, Centre for Sustainable Energy Systems has developed a panel-mountedm tracking, concentrator solar collector. This Micro-concentrator collector is similar in size to existing solar thermal panels, so is suitable for domestic residential application. Unlike existing products this concept lends itself to the integration of photovoltaic cells. A single unit will have the capability to produce both electricity and hot water. This Combined Heat and Power Solar (CHAPS) Micro-concentrator solar collector is intended for installation in a split domestic solar water heater system. The heat generated by the concentrated light is transferred to a fluid pumped through the receiver. This heat is then transferred to the tank via the heat exchanger.
The prototype Micro-concentrator has seven reflective elements that focus light onto the black painted copper tube receivers. At a later stage photovoltaic cells will be fitted to the receivers to generate electricity as well as useful heat.
Development of the Micro-concentrator is continuing. This paper will describe the Micro-concentrator collector. Present performance predictions based on TRNSYS modelling and provide indicative test results.
