    Abstract

As modern technological projects have increasingly become larger, more complex and
interdisciplinary, systems engineering and Information Technology (IT) architecture design
have come to play a major role in technology-based projects. To successfully perform systems
engineering and/or IT architecture design roles, the systems engineers and IT architects need a
systems view or, in other words, a high capacity for engineering system thinking (CEST).
Engineering Systems Thinking is a major high-order thinking skill. It is essential to have a
broad perspective when dealing with systems and processes. Identifying those employees with
better systems thinking capabilities is critical in most organizations. This paper proposes a
new tool for the selection of engineers and IT architects to jobs requiring capacity for
engineering systems thinking. The tool that was tested and implemented in a field study which
included 54 participants from a large hi-tech organization. Results of reliability and validity
    tests are presented.
