    Abstract

The idea of producing a 'Linguistic Atlas of French Polynesia' was first conceived at the end of the 1980s, when the University of French Polynesia was founded. A fair part of our efforts were devoted to producing a book fully accessible to the two major scientific languages, French and English. The subjects addressed in this book include the human body, life and health ; society ; traditional techniques and activities, and finally the physical environment (flora and fauna). The work so far accomplished should, we hope, encourage enthusiasts of Polynesian languages and cultures including future generations of researchers to continue along the path.
