    Abstract

The Antarctic Treaty, which entered into force in 1961, is at the centre of an extensive and continually evolving regime governing Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. The Treaty represents a remarkable agreement that provides the basis for peaceful cooperation in that area of Earth south of 60 degrees. It enable freedom of scientific investigation, facilitates free exchange of information between the parties to the Treaty, and sets aside differences of view over sovereignty.
