Australia, Japan and Minilateralism in the Economic-Security Nexus

Research output: Contribution to conferencePaper

Abstract

A key issue for Indo-Pacific minilateralism is geoeconomics and the question of how Japan and Australia might better cooperate in achieving their geoeconomic goals through minilateralism. This paper examines this question in terms of the “economic-security nexus”—how economic activities are used strategically. First, it examines the difficulties posed by a rising China and its approach to the regional order. It then looks at the role of minilateralism. It finishes with key takeaways on what the current international context suggests about Australia-Japan cooperation.
