Australia’s energy transition collides with Japan’s energy security

Research output: Contribution to specialist publicationGeneral Articlepeer-review

Abstract

Australia — which supplies over a third of Japan's energy needs — is managing the change the bilateral relationship needs as both countries aim for net zero emissions by 2050. This transition, challenged by last year's diplomatic spat and Japan's increasing concerns about energy security, has highlighted Australia's need to improve its investment environment and refocus its energy trade on processing more critical minerals for export. Together, the Australian and Japanese governments need to increase their cooperation and strategic planning.
