    Abstract

    The Solomon Islands pact with China caught many by surprise, but to others the signs were long evident. At the best of times, Australias political leaders struggle to look beyond the tyranny of the urgent to manage longer term issues and that is all the more challenging when a development like this occurs during an election campaign. But visionary leadership is needed that looks beyond the clever way Canberra was outplayed in Honiara.
