Badimaya Guwaga: An illustrated wordlist of the Badimaya language of Western Australia

Research output: Book/ReportEdited Book

Abstract

This book is a short guide to Badimaya, an Aboriginal language of Western Australia. It contains information about Badimaya spelling and pronunciation, an illustrated list of over 450 Badimaya words, and an English-Badimaya finderlist for quick reference.

This publication is aimed at those people wishing to learn Badimaya. It is hoped it will be a valuable aide to language revitalisation, and be useful to Badimaya people, both adults and children, who want to learn about their language. It is also hoped that this guide will be of interest to non-Aboriginal people, especially those living in or near traditional Badimaya country, who want to learn more of the traditional language of their region.

Chapters in this book are organised by particular themes (such as body parts, kin terms, etc.) with words reinforced by the inclusion of illustrations, example sentences and practice exercises.

This guide is presented in a similar format to other guides of Midwest languages produced by the Yamaji Language Centre; Wajarri Wangga, Nhanda Wangganhaa and Malgana Wangganyina.
