Abstract

Since the June 2007 elections, Belgium has appeared to be on the verge of state collapse. Linguistic demands by a majority of the population led the French-speaking state set up in 1830 to gradually respect the Dutch language on equal footing with the French one. The rise and development of nationalist-regionalist parties, triggered the gradual transformation of Belgium into a federal state. The setting up of a dual federalism however follows a centrifugal logic Political elites, have found institutional responses in order to save the country from violent expressions, at least at the cost of a rapidly evaporating federal state.
