    Abstract

Substitution reactions of binuclear niobium cluster anion [Nb<inf>2</inf>S<inf>4</inf>(NCS)<inf>8</inf>]4- with different types of pyridine-based diimine ligands have been carried out. In the case of 2,2-bipyridine (bipy) and its derivatives, only monosubstituted complexes [Nb<inf>2</inf>S<inf>4</inf>(NCS)<inf>6</inf>L]2- have been isolated. In the case of 1,10-phenanthroline and 2-(2-pyridyl)benzimidazole (Hpbz), both mono- and disubstituted complexes, [Nb<inf>2</inf>S<inf>4</inf>(NCS)<inf>6</inf>L]2- and [Nb<inf>2</inf>S<inf>4</inf>(NCS)<inf>4</inf>L<inf>2</inf>], respectively, have been obtained. Crystal structures of (Et<inf>4</inf>N)<inf>2</inf>[Nb<inf>2</inf>S<inf>4</inf>(NCS)<inf>6</inf>(bipy)]·0.5bipy·0.7CH<inf>3</inf>CN and [Nb<inf>2</inf>S<inf>4</inf>(pbmz)<inf>2</inf>(NCS)<inf>4</inf>]·5DMF·0.8H<inf>2</inf>O have been determined. All compounds have been characterized by NMR, ESI mass spectrometry, IR, UV/Vis spectroscopy, and CV. TiO<inf>2</inf> nanoparticles modified with (Et<inf>4</inf>N)<inf>2</inf>[Nb<inf>2</inf>S<inf>4</inf>(NCS)<inf>6</inf>(bipy)] show moderate photocatalytic activity in the reaction of H<inf>2</inf> generation from water in the presence of Na<inf>2</inf>S/Na<inf>2</inf>SO<inf>3</inf> as a sacrificial electron donor system. The linear and nonlinear optical properties of the complexes with bipyridine ligands have been studied; the complexes function as broad-band optical limiters.
