Abstract
It is a postmodern mystery. It is not easy to read, on the contrary, it can really make people lose patience, and in the end, there is no closure, no satisfactory solution. But it is really worth reading if you are fascinated by original writing techniques, different layers and substrates, and if you love reading between the lines. In Kitamura's short novel you will find so much to discover, about the British's preconceptions about the cultures they perceive as 'other' and inferior, but also about the closure and circumspection of the cultures of the small villages - wherever they are.
