    Abstract

    In the culture of hyperbole stimulated by university research assessment exercises and international league tables, it can sometimes seem that every third book is represented as paradigm shifting. There are, of course, far fewer that do actually recast our understanding of a major chunk of the past. James Belichs Replenishing the Earth belongs to this select band.
