Abstract
Caste is central to discussions about politics, identity and social change in India. Yet, in the state of West Bengal, caste is rarely mentioned, often viewed as irrelevant or even an “embarrassment” to speak of. Is West Bengal then a remarkable exception, devoid of caste divisions and politics or is there another reason why caste is so little discussed? This ground-breaking book addresses this issue and argues that caste certainly is significant in West Bengal, exploring the reasons why the topic of caste has been so frequently avoided.
