    Abstract

The stationary states and stability of the condensate in an optical lattice, in the framework of the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation with a periodic potential were analyzed. It was confirmed that some of the earlier prediction for the condensate structure based on the effective tight-binding model, as well as revealed a number of features not described by the effective discrete models. It was demonstrated that the spectrum of such periodic modes possesses a band-gap structure, which depends on the number of atoms.
