Abstract
In 1999, Australians voted to reject the removal of the Queen as Head of State in Australia. It would be wrong though to see this vote as an endorsement of monarchy. However, the vote did throw issues of the role of Britishness in Australia into the political arena. In fact it was the residual Britishness of the republican movement and its commitment to the sovereignty of Parliament, rather than the Britishness of the monarchists, which was crucial in the defeat of the republican campaign.
