Abstract
Australia is a nation that has always benefited from the ability to produce more food than its population requires. Exports of the major grain and meat products average about 80% of gross production. Consequently, Australia and countries producing similar production excesses have an important role in global food security. This paper will question whether this situation is likely to continue. Climate change scenarios for Australia indicate significant reductions in mean rainfall and increases in temperature across the major agricultural production zones. We assess the likely impact of these projected changes on the key commodities of wheat and beef.
