    Abstract

This paper studies carrier frequency offset (CFO) estimation in practical orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems like IEEE 802.16. The estimator derived in this paper exploits channel statistical information, so it outperforms the conventional maximum likelihood estimators when the signal to noise ratio is low. In practical OFDM systems, the complexity of the proposed method can be reduced by taking advantage of the repetition structure in preamble symbols. Simulation results with IEEE 802.16 OFDM system under both stationary and mobile channels show the proposed approach has excellent performance at reasonable computational complexity.
