    Abstract

Naturally occurring sugar mimetic alkaloids 1-deoxymannojirimycin (DMJ, 1) and 6-0-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-DMJ were each prepared in a completely stereoselective manner from the cis-1,2-dihydrocatechol 3. The spectral and physical data derived proved an excellent match with those obtained on an authentic sample.
