Abstract
As Australians enjoy the freedom of summer holidays, we should spare a thought for two Canadians who have begun the new year as political detainees in China. Our first thought should be for their welfare. Our second should be that next time this could be us. By imagining this is not our problem, we increase the risk that some unlucky Australians will one day find themselves similarly mistreated.
