Abstract

Thyroid surgery still is indicated as treatment of choice in specific patients with Graves' hyperthyroidism (children with goiters, patients with recurrent hyperthyroidism and large goiters, severe hyperthyroidism, severe endocrine orbitipathy etc.). Comparing our experience in more than 800 patients and that of the present literature different surgical radicality: subtotal thyroidectomy with remnants below 4ml and total thyroidectomy proof equal effectiveness. Early postoperative thyroxin substitution is mandatory in these patients, as the control of serum calcium levels are. Altogether thyroid surgery will keep its value in treating patients with Graves' hyperthyroidism, but only when it is performed meticulous with necessary radicality and with low morbidity.
