Abstract
Malaysia is a multiethnic country consisting of ethnic Malays, Chinese, Indians and others, including indigenous peoples. One of the legacies of the British colonial divide and rule policy is the close linkage between ethnicity and religion so that a Malay person is defined as a Muslim in the Malaysian Constitution (Article 160). Most Chinese are Taoist-Buddhists and Christians, and the majority of Indians are predominantly Hindu and Christians, although there is a small percentage of Chinese and Indians who are Muslims.
