N2 - This chapter considers the cities uses as principal residences by emperors during the Tetrarchic period (ad 284–324). These included Antioch (Antakya), Nicomedia (İzmit), Sirmium (Sremska Mitrovica), Thessalonica (Thessaloniki), and Serdica (Sofia) in the eastern provinces and Mediolanum (Milan), Augusta Treverorum (Trier), and Aquileia (ancient name retained) in the western half of the empire. The cities were all equipped with infrastructure, such as palaces, circuses, and baths, which marked them out as suitable residences to house the emperor and his court. These transformations did not occur simultaneously, but over a period of some decades. The chapter considers the way in which the foundation of these principal residences, and the movement between them, shaped the court community during the Tetrarchic period.
