    Abstract

    Today Lone Pine is a peaceful and picturesque war cemetery and a popular site of commemoration and reflection for Australians visiting the Gallipoli peninsula in Turkey. Yet, a century ago, Lone Pine was the scene of hellish fighting, Charles Bean, the First World War Australian official historian, considered the hand-to-hand fighting at Lone Line "the heaviest of its kind in which Australian troops ever took part"
