    Abstract

During its intraerythrocytic cycle, the malaria parasite requires an extracellular supply of various nutrients (Kirk and Saliba 2007; Saliba and Kirk 2001b), including the water-soluble vitamin pantothenate (also known as vitamin B5). Pantothenate is a precursor to coenzyme A (CoA), an important coenzyme for many biochemical reactions that has been estimated to be used by as many as 9 % of all known enzymes (Strauss 2010).
