Abstract

Recently,Lutzoni(1997)usedatestdescribedbyRodrigoetal.(1993;hereinafter referredtoastheRKB3test)tocompare phylogeniesconstructedbyusingribosomal RNAgenesequences(rDNA)andintergenic transcribedspacersequences(ITS)froma groupofrelatedbasidiomycetespecies.Lutzonidiscussedtherelationshipsamongst thespecies,buthealsocommentedextensivelyontheRKB3tests,particularlyona presumptivebiasinthemethodandaproposedworkaround.Here,IconÂŽnemyself toadiscussionofLutzonisassessmentof theRKB3test.Inparticular,Isuggestthat (1)thebiasdescribedbyLutzoniisanartifactofinadequatebootstrapsamplingand (2)Lutzonisproposedworkaroundmayresultinmisleadinginferences.
