    Abstract

There is a need to recalibrate our conceptualisation of civilian protection in global politics to one that is relevant to the contemporary global security environment. The concept of protection in global politics needs to be thought through critically. This chapter draws out five different conceptualisations of protection that, when viewed as a whole, point to the variegated politics and practices of civilian protection in global politics. By unpacking different conceptualisations of protection that are dominant in scholarly and policy thinking, the possibility for opening up creative avenues to enhance the protection of populations that aligns with contemporary practices can be imagined.
