Abstract
This report was funded by icare and undertaken in partnership with the Master Builders Association of New South Wales. The report presents Stage 1 results of a project titled Conversations about life, health and safety: Social supports for young construction workers' health and safety. 41 interviews were conducted (30 with apprentices and 11 with supervisors from training employer organisations). The data was analysed to: â— understand the way that supervisors and apprentices talk about life, health and safety, â— identify the characteristics of supportive interaction and supervision of apprentices, and â— identify organisational or context-related drivers of conversation failure. The analysis will be used to inform the development of an intervention designed to improve communication and social support provided to construction apprentices in the workplace.
