Abstract

Criminology was invented as a new way of reducing human suffering. If an invention is a 'new design for doing something', the 'something' criminology was designed for was less crime and injustice. Criminology has been most successful in producing those results when it has focused on inventing and testing new laws, institutions, and social practices for dealing with crime. This chapter attempts to persuade both current and potential criminologists to use criminology for invention, as well as for building the basic science of crime.
