Abstract
Terry Irving responds to Paul Pickering's criticism of his work in a recent issue of LHR, followed by the latter's rejoinder. The exchange is part of a wider discussion between them about 'Chartism and something more' in the context of colonial Australia. Irving criticizes the 'British world' focus of Pickering's work because it underplays the material forces and practices that reveal the situation-specific meaning of political ideas; Pickering contends that Irving ignores transnational and inter-colonial conceptions of popular politics and culture in the radical Anglophone world, and fundamentally challenges his materialist methodology.
