    Abstract

The search for a definition of an ideal amorphous solid stems from a complete theory of plasticity in amorphous solid polymers. It derives from the understanding of, and analogy with, crystalline solids, for which the dislocation theory of plasticity was so successful. The development of plasticity theory in crystalline solids depended on the confluence of three essential elements: theory of crystallography providing the definition of ideal crystalline solids, mechanisms of plastic deformation, and an experimental method of verification.
