Demagogy, Culture Industry, Psychotechnics: The Authoritarian Personality as media reception framework

Paul K. Jones beschreibt, dass das Autoritäre nicht als ein einheitlicher Überbegriff aufgefasst werden kann. Da das Projekt der Frankfurter Schule darauf abzielte, die Empfänglichkeit für Propaganda in den USA zu messen und zu ergründen, muss man den europäischen Faschismus von amerikanischen Faschismustendenzen unterscheiden. In diesem Kontext betrachtet Jones vor allem die nicht mit dem europäischen Faschismus gleichzusetzende Kulturindustrie. Im Zentrum seiner Analysen des Autoritären stehen demnach nicht nur Menschen, die empfänglich für den Faschismus sind, sondern es geht auch um das Autoritäre als eine Frage der kulturtechnischen Produktion, genauer der von ihm fokussierten Psychotechnik.

My chapter locates the famous work, The Authoritarian Personality, within the Frankfurt School's Studies in Prejudice Project. It emphasizes the role of that work within that project as a media reception study geared to the possibility that demagogues would once again dominate the USA's culture industry (as is now the case). I so challenge orthodox understandings of this work by emphasising the Institute for Social Research's preference for the concept of modern demagogy and its psychotechnics over 'authoritarian' and the related significance for Adorno of the 'manipulative type' he identified within The Authoritarian Personality's interview material. The chapter also articulates this analysis briefly with present day circumstances.
