    Abstract

My chapter locates the famous work,The Authoritarian Personality, within the Frankfurt School's Studies in Prejudice Project. It emphasizes the role of that work within that project as a media reception study geared to the possibility that demagogues would once again dominate the USA's culture industry (as is now the case). I so challenge orthodox understandings of this work by emphasising the Institute for Social Research's preference for the concept of modern demagogy and its psychotechnics over 'authoritarian' and the related significance for Adorno of the 'manipulative type' he identified within The Authoritarian Personality's interview material. The chapter also articulates this analysis briefly with present day circumstances.
