Abstract
The term democratization has been used narrowly to mean the institution of regular, free, and fair multicandidate elections for public officefeaturing a vibrant political opposition and an independent mass mediaand more broadly to include the spread and institutionalization of the schemas and ideassuch as law-abiding citizenshipunderlying democracy. While it has been heavily debated whether democratization in the second sense has taken place in south and central Asia, even purely in the first sense, democratization has had a tumultuous history in these regions.
