Abstract

We intend to develop a compact detector for balloon and space flights using off-the-shelf MCPs, CMOS sensors and optics. The detector should be capable of working in direct frame transfer mode as well as photon counting mode for single photon event detection. The identification and centroiding of each photon event is done using an FPGA(Field programmable Gate Array) based data acquisition and real-time processing system. This guarantees a good deal of flexibility allowing easy testing of different algorithms without modifying the external connections, thus maintaining an unaltered system architecture.
