    Abstract

The poet Ingeman received a scholarship to travel abroad and, like most of other Danish writers and artists of the time, he travelled south, mainly to Italy. During this trip he wrote a number of poems recording his impressions or re-telling stories he had heard, and after his return, he published these in book form, linked by a prose narrative. I was interested to know what he wrote about an area which, as a former student and resident of Zurich, I knew particularly well, Northern Switzerland, and I put his observations (and errors) in their historical context.
