Abstract

In this work, we demonstrate a novel approach to achieve directional lasing in a bottom-up grown III-V micro-ring laser system by coupling the whispering-gallery mode emission from the ring laser into a vertical nanowire at the ring center, which functions as a directional antenna in the system. We achieve out-of-plane laser emission in the coupled systems with excellent far-field directivity. Furthermore, we also demonstrate control over the emission directionality and side mode suppression by tuning the geometric parameters of the systems. Our work lays the foundation for on-chip micro-lasers with low power consumption and tunable emission directionality.
