Abstract
An overview is given of the first experimental observation of the effect of a static (dc) applied electric field on the photoexcitation and autoionization of doubly excited states in helium below the He+(N=2) threshold. The interplay between the electron-ion interaction, electron-electron interactions, and the modification of the Coulomb are explored well by the applied electric field.
